The article addresses representations of the concept «the English language» in American linguistic world picture. A complex questionnaire had been designed to study the structure of this concept The detailed analysis of the linguistic data taken from the questionnaire results show that English is mainly viewed on the one hand as an instrument of effective communication in the business world and as a career-helper. On the other hand – as a symbol of ethnic and cultural identity. However, the instrumental attitude towards the language prevails due to the global spread of the English language in the world.
