Applying the theoretical principles derived from the linguistic analysis of conversation and cognitive studies, the study of dramatic characters in plays written in previous historical epochs, may be effectively used to investigate gender roles in a diachronic perspective. The article argues that an analysis of Shakespeare’s heroines’ conversational behaviour enables to reconstruct real women’s communicative personalities. The analysis of linguistic markers peculiar to Shakespeare’s heroines’ discourse reveals a set of existential concepts and cognitive scenarios different from contemporary feminine discourse.
