The paper presents an analysis of cultural and social-psychological foundations of tolerance. The main purpose is to demonstrate that the level of tolerance in society depends on dominant tendencies of collective identity in its positive and negative variations. The theoretical scheme fixes the opposition of the two types of social relations. The first type are personal, «short», «intimate» relations, that represent the model of «community» and its «personal trust» principle. The second type marks impersonal, «long», «anonymous» relations connected with the model of «society» and «system trust» principle. The main idea is that the development of tolerance depends on social distance («alienation») that is dominant in «system» relations.
