The article reviews the background for the emergence of the philosophical (epistemic) inquiry (S'l^foi?) in Archaic Greece, primarily among the patterns of the prophetic tradition, as this practice rested upon signs and their interpretation, and availability of signs is one of the didzesis’s requirement. It is shown that there is a semantic relationship between vOo?, SlZfai? and of|j.a and this relationship is realized through the motif of the «route». The paper also examines a collective (communal) way of prophecy interpretation which is opposed to professional activity of seers and diviners, successful and unsuccessful variants of such interpretations. It is concluded that the communal way of interpretation best corresponds to didzesis as a philosophical method of cognition.
