On the basis of the historical survey provided in the paper, I argue that the so called Leibniz and Bentham traditions exemplify two main approaches to understanding of norms from the viewpoint of logic. I show that the Leibniz tradition which insists that deontic modalities should be formalized with the help of the analogy between alethic and deontic modalities, is in fact a particular case of the Bentham tradition. The success that the Leibniz tradition had been enjoying in the 50-60-ies rests upon two main reasons. First, the alethic - deontic analogy provides a convenient syntactical tool for creating deontic calculi. Second, it was von Wright, one of the most eminent logicians of the XX c. who has suggested the first deontic formalisms which have been compiled in the mainstream of Leibniz tradition.
