The paper studies the history of origin of the concept of the transcendental in medieval philosophy: formation of the substantial component and appearance of the term. Conditionality of this process is revealed by social factors. Special attention is given to the role of social conditions at the final stage of this process: a sharpness of opposition of the Roman Catholic Church to dualistic heresies and to the doctrine of the double truth of Latin Averroists, doctrinal conflict of papacy with the Franciscans, opposition of Roman Catholicism to the Eastern Orthodoxy.
