The article examines the role of eigentlich (authentic) and uneigentlich (inauthentic) in M. Heidegger’s treatise Being and Timer. The psychoanalytical concept of anxiety allows to discern two different understandings of the transition from the inauthentic mode of being to the authentic one. Inauthentic being functions in them as a defense against the anxiety of the destruction of the world, and this is the reason why it should necessarily remain indefinite.
